Chapter 12

I parked my car along the quiet suburban street and looked around. Barbara’s neighborhood seemed peaceful on the surface, with kids playing in yards and adults working in flower beds. But I knew there was darkness lurking beneath.

Taking a deep breath, I stepped out onto the sidewalk and approached the first house. A middle-aged woman answered the door, eyeing me warily until I introduced myself.

“I’m Hazel, Barbara Collins’ niece,” I lied smoothly. “I was just checking in to see if anyone has seen or heard from my aunt recently.”

The woman’s face softened. “Oh, I’m sorry dear. I haven’t seen Barbara in weeks. I hope you find her soon.”

I thanked her and moved on to the next house. Most gave similar responses - they were concerned about the sudden disappearance but had no real information.

After an hour of canvassing with nothing substantial to show for it, I was starting to feel discouraged. But then a young woman with vibrant red hair approached me.

“You’re looking for Barbara?” she asked before I could even speak. Her green eyes were sharp, and she seemed to stare right through me. A tingle of intuition told me this woman knew more than she was letting on.

“Yes, I’m her niece, Hazel,” I replied. “And you are?”

“Brenna. I live just over there.” She pointed to a small blue house two doors down. “Barbara and I chat sometimes when we’re both in our yards. She’s a lovely woman.”

“She is,” I agreed. “When was the last time you spoke with her?”

Brenna pursed her lips, thinking. “Must have been...three weeks ago? We talked about her rose bushes over the fence. But then she stopped coming outside. I figured maybe she was sick.”

“I see. Well, if you hear anything or remember anything else unusual, please let me know.” I handed Brenna my business card for the funeral home. She turned it over in her hands, looking thoughtful.

“This is a peculiar situation,” she mused. “I’d like to help if I can. Barbara was always kind to me.” She met my eyes. “Perhaps we could discuss things further over tea?”

I hesitated. My witchy senses weren’t going off about Brenna, but they weren’t singing her praises either. However, she seemed to genuinely want to help.

“That would be lovely, thank you,” I said. “Are you free now?”

“Absolutely.” Brenna said. “Follow me, we’ll go to the café on Oak Street. Much cozier spot for a chat than these doorsteps.”

I walked with her to the café, making small talk along the way. The interior was charmingly decorated with vintage furniture and local art. Brenna ordered a pot of floral tea and some scones for us before settling in.

“So,” she began, “tell me truthfully, dear, what makes you so concerned about Barbara’s whereabouts?”

I bit my lip. Brenna’s astute gaze told me she wouldn’t be easily fooled. I decided to take a measured risk. “This may sound strange, but I have reason to believe something...unnatural happened to her.”

Brenna raised an eyebrow but didn’t scoff. “What sort of unnatural thing?”

Leaning in, I dropped my voice.
